Bone Graft

Bone Grafts in Kernersville

Preparing the Way for Your Future Smile

Your teeth are held in place by your jawbone. When a tooth is lost or removed, the bone beneath the empty spot starts to weaken as it no longer has to provide support. The deep hollow that is created as the bone erodes prohibits the future installation of a dental implant. In order to make dental implants a possibility, the bone and gums in the empty spot need to be raised to the level of the rest of the teeth. Our Kernersville dentists have the expertise necessary to execute this procedure and make the way for a future dental implant.

Are Bone Grafts as Scary as They Sound?

While the name may seem intimidating, bone grafts are a relatively simple procedure geared towards thickening and strengthening the jawbone to accommodate dental implants in the future. The bone graft process looks different depending on how long the missing tooth or teeth have been out of the mouth.

The three broad types of bone grafts are:

  • Socket graft : immediately after a tooth has been lost, bone grafting material is packed into the tooth socket to encourage bone to maintain height until implant can be installed
  • Lateral ridge preservation graft : months or years after a tooth has been lost, the worn down area in the jawbone is built up with bone grafting material and/or granules of patient’s bone that are incorporated into jawbone as it heals
  • Block bone graft : this procedure allows for radical bone reconstruction and regrowth many years after a significant portion of teeth have been lost and caused large defects in the jawbone
